The Dino Pet by biopop is a science-focused kids' project that uses photosynthesis to stimulate bioluminescence produced from dinoflagellates. I call it a project because the Dino Pet requires regular care and "feeding" to effectively glow, best suited for kids ages 8+.
The invisible, plankton-like dinoflagellates absorb the sun during the day and glow at night when stimulated. The Dino Pet serves as a micro-aquarium to house and feed these microscopic creatures.
We received a Dino Pet to review, along with a pouch of food and care instructions. The Dino Pet comes partly unfilled with liquid, allowing room to add the liquid "food". Once filled to the top, you place the pet in indirect sunlight to charge. We found it takes several days of charging before the dinoflagellates will glow at night. If effectively cared for, the pet glows at night in flashes of blue light when moved.
The Dino Pet is a cool science lesson for kids, since it uses sunlight, water and nutrients to stimulate a natural phenomenon rarely otherwise seen. The Dino Pet allows you to hold one of nature's most magical occurrences in the palm of your hand. Every year, thousands of people travel the world to experience the magic of bioluminescence in nature. The Dino Pet lets you bring this beautiful phenomenon into the comfort of your own home, and enjoy it night after night.
You may remember the breathtaking scene from the movie Life of Pi, showing the same effect of bioluminescence in nature. The Dino Pet is a mini environment that fosters this same effect!
We didn't get our pet to glow quite this bright (as seen in the product photo), but we did manage to create bright flashes of blue light which amazed my 3-year-old. She even wanted to keep the Dino Pet in her bed at night. The water effectively stays in the clear dino-shaped container and can be refilled with food through a round opening in the bottom that seals with a stopper.
The stopper has a slit that requires a coin or edge to turn it, preventing the Dino Pet from being spilled by curious little hands.
The Dino Pet does require regular care, such as regularly giving the pet indirect sunlight. You also have to give the Dino Pet a "schedule" of light vs. darkness to effectively promote maximum glow. Don't leave it in direct sunlight, which can kill the flagellates. We made this mistake, but fortunately biopop offers Dino Pet refills to resurrect your Dino Pet from the dark.
Far more than a toy, the Dino Pet is a contemporary living art piece, introductory pet, biological magic trick, conversation starter and science lesson that instills a sense of wonder in people of all ages. biopop also offers the Dio Pet gift set and storybook. Check out this interesting science-focused pet for yourself!
