With winter just around the corner, it's a good idea to be proactive with your family's health. Break out the humidifier to moisturize your kids' skin and tiny nasal passages and stock up on some roll-on essential oils. Here are some of my tips for keeping our family healthy in the cold weather (and surprisingly we don't get sick very often!)
I have never been very into essential oils. Primarily because I don't know a ton about how to use them. The disclaimers warning against using them undiluted and details about which essential oils are safe for kids and which aren't kind of overwhelm me. I've primarily stuck with using essential oils for cleaning and I LOVE my cinnamon oil infused DIY kitchen cleaning spray. I also enjoy Rocky Mountain Oils roll-on blends, which are already diluted for kids and easy as can be to use. My daughter loves having a bit of the lavender "Counting Sheep" roll-on blend rubbed into her feet at night. It's kind of become a bedtime routine. Just one tiny swipe fills her bedroom with the soft scent of lavender. Many moms use essential oils to calm coughs and build up their family's immunity. Rocky Mountain Oils has roll-on blends for this too, "Immunity" can be applied to the bottom of the feet to support healthy immune system function, and "Breathe" calms coughs and respiratory congestion.
The Kids Line blends are sold in portable, 10ml roll-on bottles at a 2% dilution to provide children two years and older the full benefits of essential oils in the safest way possible.
Winter is notorious for chapped lips, dry skin, and stuffy noses. I love pampering my babies with gentle products that also alleviate some of winter's discomfort. My daughter the soft lavender fragrances of Earth Mama Angel Baby's Sleep Little One gift set; silky lavender lotion and body wash, luxurious lavender meringue lip balm (my 4-year-old LOVES lip products), and a cuddly lavender infused pillow. The pillow hasn't left her bed since she received it, this cute heart pillow smells heavenly and is super soft, filled with flax and lavender.
Earth Mama Angel Baby's Calming Body Wash and Shampoo is a foaming wash that gently lathers, leaving your child's skin smelling clean and fresh. This gentle body wash is made with castile soap, naturally calming organic vanilla and lavender pure essential oils, and soothing organic calendula. Perfect for scrubbing dirty kids and grubby babies too!
The Calming Lavender Baby Lotion goes on silky smooth and doesn't irritate the skin. I can testify to this because I have fairly bad eczema in the winter and a lot of products irritate my hands. Earth Mama Angel Baby's lavender lotion effectively moisturizes my hand without irritating and also smells amazing. It also contains organic Roobios, a native South American plant used to treat a wide range of symptoms ranging from headaches, colic, asthma, hay fever and insomnia. Due to its high content of the anti-inflammatory antioxidant quercetin, Rooibos is also excellent for treating skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis. It soothes diaper rash and improves skin condition in acne sufferers. Shop on Amazon »
It's important to encourage kids to eat a healthy diet to ward off sickness. It can be hard to convince my kids to eat healthy foods. They like to stick to their top 3 favorite foods; yogurt, cheddar cheese, and dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets from Costco. I mix up their diet by offering smoothies made with fresh fruits and bit of spinach. My kids love berries and grapes. I encourage them to try new things by offering creative combinations. Carrots and broccoli taste much yummier if dipped in Ranch dressing, and grilled cheese and ham sandwiches pair well with Ketchup. My kids most often request to eat their lunch on their natural bamboo feeding plates from Pacific Baby, made from biodegradable and compostable bamboo. Available in a few colors, this Pacific Baby natural bamboo plate is divided and shaped like an apple. The "leaf" section of the plate is perfect to hold dipping sauce such as Ranch dressing or Ketchup. It's also a great place to put my kids' daily gummy vitamins.
Yummi Pouch cloth snack bags are fun to hold healthy snacks. Packing your own snack bags helps save money and reduce trash, since you can buy snacks in larger containers rather than the small individual chip bags or raisin containers. Plus you can use the cloth snack bag over and over again, easily washing them in your dishwasher or washing machine. Personally, I usually hand wash these Yummi Pouch cloth snack bags and let them air dry overnight.

If you're going to give your kids the occasional treat, choose items that are sweetened with natural sugar such as homemade chocolate covered strawberries. These delicious chocolate dipped strawberries are so easy to make and are a great alternative to artificially sweetened treats such as candy, some kinds of ice cream, otter pops and Popsicles, and many kinds of store bought cookies.
Protect against sickness by using natural immunity boosters, taking your daily gummy vitamins and drinking lots of milk and Vitamin C rich drinks like orange juice and grapefruit juice.

Always wash your kids' hands and your own hands after visiting a public place to guard against germs. Teach your kids to not trade snacks or share cups with other kids. And encourage your kids to keep their hands and toys out of their mouths. (unlike the photo below!)
Have a happy, healthy fall and winter!
