Homemade salt playdough is super easy to make and lots of fun to play with. I’ve had some of my playdough for more than a year and it stores wonderfully as long as I save it in an airtight container. You can jazz up basic playdough with fragrance, glitter, and even tiny beads for extra fun sensory sculpting. My kids love making creations out of playdough, “baking muffins” with playdough, and mixing playdough colors. DIY playdough is a perfect interactive kids’ activity to keep preschoolers and toddlers occupied during fall afternoons, or to keep them distracted while you are trying to make dinner. Try our easy playdough instructions below.
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- Food coloring
- 1 cup flour
Mix together the water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm. You can also add soap fragrance, glitter, or sparkly confetti during this step.
Remove the mixture from the heat and add the flour.
Stir until the dough thickens and then knead it with your hands until smooth. The cream of tartar is an important ingredient because it acts as a preservative. I’ve stored my dough for longer than a year in an airtight container or Ziplock bag. Washing hands before play will also extend the life of your homemade playdough. Enjoy!
