DIY Glitter Finger Paint

DIY Glitter Finger Paint

Painting with glitter finger paint is a great sensory activity for any young child and they will love helping to make the paint too! Toddlers and preschoolers alike will enjoy getting messy and expressing their creativity on whatever canvas you give them. We made some fun color combinations using the easy recipe below.

Mix together 1 cup cornstarch and 2 cups water, heating on the stove until thickened. Add 1 tbsp. salt as a natural preservative to extend the storage life of your paint and help prevent mold. Cook and stir until fully blended; the paint will look slightly opaque and smooth.

Separate the paint into paper cups to mix individual colors. We used leftover party cups from a birthday party. If you want to store leftover paint, use containers that have a lid.

Add a few drops of food coloring to the paint base in each cup.

Mix together and sprinkle 1 tsp. of glitter into the paint, adding more as desired. Get your kids involved by letting them mix the paint and add the glitter. My three-year-old loves helping with everything I do, which I’m enjoying as long as it lasts, because I know that won’t always be the case!

We poured our glitter finger paint into recycled craft containers with screw-on caps for easy storage. You could also use food storage containers, muffin tins covered with plastic wrap, or divided lunchboxes to store your paint. If you don’t plan on saving leftovers, just leave the paint in your mixing cups and enjoy it!

Your homemade glitter paint can be stored in the fridge for about a week, or longer with the added salt ingredient. We didn’t put salt in our first batch of paint and mold started to grow after a few days, so hopefully the salt helps prevent that!

DIY glitter finger paint doesn’t dry very well, so I’d recommend enjoying the paint, squishing it around on paper, and not worrying about saving the artwork. It is fun for spreading around and watching the sparkly paint dance across the page in the sunlight!
