Preparing meals for your kids can be challenging and it can be tempting to rip open packages. Lunchtime doesn't have to be hard; here are some of our homemade go-to meals that are fairly healthy and finger-friendly.
Cut a slice of cheese, place it between two halves of toasted bread and pop it into the microwave for 15 seconds. Give it extra appeal by cutting it up into small triangles or little shapes using a cutter like FunBites. Add fruit for a well balanced meal — dairy, grains, and fruit, check!
Make homemade macaroni and cheese by boiling and draining pasta and mixing it with homemade cheese sauce. To make the sauce, heat 1/2 cup of milk or light cream in a pan, add 1 tsp. butter and 1 1/2 cup grated cheese (cheddar or Havarti), and stir continually until fully combined. Don't let the sauce overheat or it may separate or scald. Add a tbsp. of flour if you need to thicken it. Mix it the sauce into the cooked pasta, let it cool and serve it to your happy kiddos.
Fruit is a healthy and yummy side dish for any meal! Some of our favorites are strawberries, grapes, mango, and pineapple.
Again featuring calcium-rich cheese, quesadillas are easy to make for lunch or snacks. Just melt cheese between two tortillas lightly fried in olive oil. Dip in sour cream or hummus.
Yogurt is a healthy and easy snack to enjoy on the go, especially in a reusable food pouch like a Yummi Pouch. Mix in berries or honey, or enjoy it by itself.
Smoothies are a great way to pack lots of fruit, dairy, and even veggies into one meal. Our favorite combinations include variations of bananas, strawberries, blueberries, mango, oranges, and Greek yogurt. Trow any combination of fruit into a blender with ice and mix it up for a refreshing and delicious treat! You can also sneak in antioxidants like carrots, kale, and spinach.
