Fall birthday parties can be tough to plan because the weather can deter the kids from going outside and running around. My daughter’s October birthday didn’t stop us from having a fun-filled party with indoor activities that were perfect for toddlers. I whipped up some fun sensory cloud dough and the girls played dress up!
When I first made cloud dough for my daughter’s princess birthday party, I made three big balls of sensory dough. And then I realized it was going to be hard to portion out pieces of homemade cloud dough for each child during the party, so I came up with sensory roses to display our cloud dough party activity! Cloud dough is like play dough except it uses cornstarch instead of flour and it doesn’t contain salt. Cloud dough is also kind of moisturizing thanks to the conditioner.
Here’s how to make homemade cloud dough that is a party-perfect centerpiece too!
Homemade Hair Conditioner Cloud Dough
All you need to make cloud dough is a few simple ingredients; cornstarch and hair conditioner!
2 cups cornstarch
1 cup hair conditioner
Food coloring (optional)
Pick a bottle of hair conditioner in a fragrance that you like, because your homemade cloud dough will smell like the conditioner. Mix the food coloring and glitter into the conditioner and stir until fully blended. Add in the cornstarch, continually mixing until the cloud dough reaches dough-like consistency. If the dough is a bit sticky you can add more cornstarch, or if it’s a bit dry you can knead in a little more conditioner.
I’d recommend mixing the food coloring and glitter into the conditioner first before adding the cornstarch. I added food coloring last and it took extra work to knead the color evenly throughout the dough.

I made 3 different hues of purple cloud dough and I created a little cloud dough rose for each birthday party guest. These cloud dough roses made it easy for the kids to share the cloud dough and play with their own portion. This soft and silky conditioner play dough is fun to stretch and squeeze.
To make cloud dough roses, roll out a small amount of dough and make dents along one side to create the rose petals. Roll up the cloud dough starting at one end, and gently arrange the petals. I made 12 cloud dough roses in just minutes for our little girl princess birthday party!

Kids will love playing with homemade conditioner cloud dough at your next party or play date. Homemade cloud dough is gentle on kids’ skin because it doesn’t contain salt. Cloud dough is fun to mold and knead and it flows when you stretch it slowly and breaks apart when you stretch it quickly. This two-ingredient cloud dough is easy to whip up in an afternoon using ingredients you already have at home. Kids can choose their favorite food coloring colors for the cloud dough and help pour in the glitter!
We dusted the top of our cloud dough roses with extra glitter for a sparkling effect! My daughter loved the different shades of purple and these roses were fun party favors. Our party guests had lots of fun squishing their cloud dough and designing their own glittery creations at my daughter’s birthday party. If you’re looking for an easy activity for your next kids party, I’d recommend making this fun sensory play dough!
