I have finished the "Floor of Your Core" program from the Tummy Team! You may remember I began this Restore Your Core rehabilitation program to help heal my post-pregnancy diastasis recti and pelvic floor weakness. I loved that they give an extra 2 weeks access so that I can catch up, because you know, life happens and you skip a week! This program made a huge difference in how I stand, sit and even use the restroom.
Before I started the program I saw a local physical therapist in my area, so that I could measure my success from this program. I am happy to say that my diastasis and floor strength has improved! I am more in touch with my pelvic floor and can actually FEEL where it is and when it is engaging!
Splinting at the beginning was difficult because it was forcing me to have a proper posture, but after the first week, I loved the feeling of it. It really helped me get in tune with my body and how it should be functioning. The stretches though at first difficult, now relieve pain and make me feel awake and ready to go.
The most challenging part of the program was consistency. It was difficult for me to remain consistent every. single. day. But hey, we are all mommies here right?! We miss a day, or two, or 159 right? Though I was inconsistent, the biggest surprise is that I could now actually FEEL my body. I knew where my muscles were, I started to understand, feel, and know how they work and function. This was very encouraging to me! The biggest difference I see in my body is my pain level. I am feeling more flexible and able to move in ways I did not know I could. My lower back pain has improved and intimacy with my husband does not hurt like it did before. The best physical benefit is that I feel stronger in my core and not like a frail old woman!
My lower back pain has decreased significantly, especially after the add-on Skype session with Gillian. She gave me a very personalized experience and got down and did the exercises she recommended for me to do, so that I can see and gave me step by step instructions on what to do to relieve my pain. I felt like she really cared about my specific circumstances and made sure I understood what she was saying and answered all my questions from the program. I would definitely add the Skype call if you are considering this program. They tailor your rehab journey to meet your needs and answer any questions you may have about your healing.
The Tummy Team provided weekly PDF printables along with the videos, so it was very easy to check off what I needed to do that week and keep on task. The "homework" and exercises included in the course are suitable for any mommy lifestyle, because many of these you can do while doing the dishes or folding laundry! The teacher in the videos gave practical how-tos for daily life; how to move when bending over to pick up children or getting down on the floor to play with your little ones. I love that this program integrates into the real life of a mom.
Overall I had a great experience and would recommend the Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation course from The Tummy Team to strengthen your muscles after pregnancy and especially if you are experiencing pain from core weakness and pelvic floor issues. The program teaches you practical exercises to help heal diastasis recti.
Many factors can contribute or increase the likelihood of getting a diastasis recti such as:
